Cronin and Wike Keep Championship Hopes Alive
June 5, 2008 Camden, NJ - LMU's men's pair of seniors David Cronin and Scott Wike took its first step towards a national championship Thursday with a second place finish in its heat at the 106th Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta, held on Cooper River in Camden, NJ. The pair will advance to Friday's repechage, with a chance to move on to Saturday's Grand Final. Under great weather conditions with a slight breeze coming from the northeast, Cronin and Wike took to the water at 7:24 a.m. in the third of three men's pair heats. The duo got off to a shaky start but recovered to cruise into second in 7:38.848. Harvard won the heat in 7:20.455 to automatically advance to the Grand Final. Loyola College (Md.) placed third in 7:52.265, barely edging Brown (7:54.305). Yale finished fifth in 8:32.916. LMU's time was the seventh-fastest on the day across the 15 boats in the three heats "It was really good to get one race under their belt," Men's Varsity Coach Brooks Jones said. "We know what we must do tomorrow in order to make the Grand Final and I am confident that we can row a faster race than we did today." Cronin and Wike will return to the river at 7:24 a.m. on Friday morning for the repechage heats. The three winners from the repechage will join the three Thursday heat winners (Harvard, Cornell, and Wisconsin) in Saturday's Grand Final at 9:50 a.m. The second and third place boats in each repechage will compete Saturday in the Petite Final for places 7-12, with the remaining pairs rowing in the 3rd Level Final for places 13-18. In addition to the men's pair repechage Friday will see the LMU's women's lightweight four rowing in its Grand Final at 3 p.m. For complete Thursday results, click here. Men's Pair Heat 3 Results
