Scoreless Bookends Snaps Streak
April 5, 2008
Davis, CA - The Loyola Marymount University women's water polo team fell in the second game of the 28th Annual Aggie Shootout in a meeting of the Western Water Polo Association heavyweights, suffering a 9-7 setback to No. 10 UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center. The setback snaps the Lions' 10-game winning streak as they fall to 15-9 on the season and 6-2 in the WWPA. The Lions went scoreless in the first period and saw UC Davis jump out to a 3-0 lead after an extra-man goal with 7:25 left in the second quarter. However, the Lions score three straight themselves to tie the game at 3-3 after Crisara Abrams, a UC Davis transfer to LMU two seasons ago, scored her second of three goals. Both teams would score goals to end the first half as UC Davis would go into the locker room up 5-4. The Lions tied the game on an extra-man goal by Diana Romero and then took their only lead of the game at 6-5 when Mary Ann Campos scored on a penalty shot. The Aggies came right back and took a 7-6 lead with two straight goals, the second goal coming with 2:17 to play in the third quarter. LMU would answer on a goal from Daisy Fish with 1:11 to play. The game would stay that way into the fourth quarter. UC Davis would finally get some daylight when the Lions were called for an ejection and the Aggies capitalized with 6:15 to play in regulation to go up 8-7. They added an insurance goal with 4:57 to play. The Lions would have three 6-on-5 chances to end the game but could not capitalize. The Lions went 4-for-9 on the 6-on-5 while UC Davis went 3-for-7. LMU continues play in the Aggie Shootout on Sunday with Cal State Bakersfield and Santa Clara.
